Jackie Robinson Day

On April 15th, 1947, Jack Roosevelt Robinson walked into the batter’s box at Ebbets Field for his Brooklyn Dodgers debut. He made history by breaking the Major League Baseball color barrier – a racially segregated stipulation that had been in effect since the league’s inception in 1876. Despite considerable resistance from opposing clubs, fans, and teammates, Robinson found a way to overcome immense racial harassment and succeed under enormous pressure, paving the way for Black players to take the field and perform at the highest level. On April 15th, 2022, Major League Baseball celebrated this significant moment for racial equality in sports with tribute videos, appearances from the Robinson family, and Jackie’s retired number 42 in bold Dodger Blue on every player jersey across the league.
