Let's dive into the history of the shoe. Originally debuting during Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz, His Airness, Michael Jordan, is called upon to make a critical shot during the waning seconds of the fourth quarter. With 5.2 seconds left, and a one point lead for the Jazz, Jordan and his Bulls needed a miracle to happen in order to win the series. As Jordan inbounds the ball, and shoots over Jazz player Byron Russell, all eyes in the Delta Center watched as the ball swooshed in the hoop and the Bulls bench cleared in jubilation. In that moment, the Air Jordan 14 became an iconic shoe in Jordan's reign of dominance.
Years after the sneaker made its debut, Tinker Hatfield, head of design of Nike, revealed the 14's he gave MJ, were actually the prototype and were not to be worn before the release. Obviously, this all changed when MJ hit the dagger series ending jumpshot. The inspiration of the shoe is taken from the Ferrari F355F1, one of the fastest cars on the planet at the time. Hatfield wanted his sneaker to embody this razor-like sharpness so he created a sneaker to fit the mold. Going away from his traditional style, the Air Jordan 14's were one of the lightest shoes in Hatfield's collection. These lightweight, sleek kicks altered the path of sports sneakers as a whole.
The original Air Jordan 14's featured breathable mesh and two zoom units to create a lightweight, comfortable shoe, which will peak performance on the court. Hatfield also put the Jumpman badge on the hood of the sneaker, as seen on the hood of the Ferrari F355F1. When the shoe originally released it featured eight colorways such as the “Oxidized Green”, “Black Toe” and the “Indiglo” and in 2011 the Jordan Family dropped two colors ways, highlighted by the “Last Shots,” a tribute to the memorable game winning buckets from His Airness, Michael Jordan.
The Air Jordan 14 “Hyper Royal” features an official colorway of white, Hyper Royal and black. This tone overtakes its leather construction, while the accents of black and Hyper Royal on the midsole and heel provide a vivid contrast. It also features a signature carbon fiber shank plate and the OG packaging completes the design. To style these kicks, I would try on the Pacific Blue Nike Sportswear Club Fleece Jogger pants. The blue on both the pants and sneakers offers a style of simplicity and coordination. While on top, I'd go for the Nike Sportswear City Tee. A tee offering a classic sport look, with coordinating colors to compliment the shoes and pants. The sneakers are set to be on sale on September 19th for $190 at select retail stores.
