BHM CREATIVITY AND CULTURE: AN INTERVIEW WITH MUGZY MCFLY

BHM CREATIVITY AND CULTURE: AN INTERVIEW WITH MUGZY MCFLY

SNIPES recently sat down and had a conversation with Mugzy McFly, an innovative designer from The Bronx.

His adventure in fashion started when he first understood the strong impact of design on feelings during his initial photoshoot. His way of creating is similar to getting inspiration from a higher power, as his ideas come from what he lives through and feels.

Mugzy’s most important contribution will be about love and being true to oneself, which comes from valuing Black Culture highly. Being in the streetwear business and viewing himself as someone who carries his heritage forward, putting parts of his background and identity into each piece he creates.

Read the interview below!

Who is Mugzy McFly?

Mugzy McFLY, is a creator. The result of imagination & wild dreams. A product of The Bronx and its many cultures. Mugzy is a man, on a journey with various side missions. Just an artist that wants to sign his name in history, in orange.

Can you share a memory of the moment you knew you wanted to be a designer?

I knew there was something for me in fashion after my first photoshoot. The thought that your own ideas can influence, and convey feelings in others was amazing to me. Once I wasn’t able to design for another brand, I knew I needed my own.

Describe your creative process when designing for your brand?

Most of my designs feel like I’m struck with creative lightning. Some outside force, an experience, a place or even a feeling forces it’s way out to become a physical product. I aim to design in a place of solution or filling a void I see.

What do you want your legacy to be?

I want my legacy to be love and authenticity. One of no skipped steps, or fabrication. A true representation of raw art & culture, not distracted by outside forces.

What does Black History mean to you?

Black history, is my history. A constant reminder of where we’ve come from, and how far we have to go. Plenty of amazing people have left their mark, I just wanna continue the legacy with my own chapter.

How do you see your role a Black man in the streetwear industry contributing to the celebration of Black culture?

Everything I create is Black culture. As a black designer my entire story is the perspective of the culture that designed me. My role, my job is to carry my culture in every room that I touch.
