Converse, a brand with a deep history and impact on culture, has made a lasting impression in sports and fashion. With the upcoming release, let’s take a trip through time to see how two famous Converse basketball shoes evolved: the Weapon and the Fastbreak. These shoes had a simple upbringing and were loved by sneakerheads, sports buffs, and fashionistas to gain everlasting fame.
Converse was started in 1908 by Marquis Mills Converse, and he opened the Converse Rubber Shoe Company in Malden, Massachusetts. At first, they made shoes with rubber soles for everyone, but in 1917, they built a sneaker that would change everything. 1917 was the birth of the highly celebrated Chuck Taylor All-Star. This type of basketball shoe was made from canvas material and would become very significant in culture, making it a strong link between Converse and the game. Through many years, Converse cemented its role in the history of basketball by achieving the support of famous NBA players and growing its range to have specialized products and sneakers.

In the 1980s, when Converse released the Weapon, the sneaker blew up and made a strong presence. It quickly received support from NBA players like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Isiah Thomas. Converse even advertised, “Bird and Magic picked what they play in… Now, you select yours.” The legacy of the Weapon is still echoing in our time, making us remember a golden age in the history of basketball.
The Fastbreak first launched in 1983, became another go-to for basketball players. Many years later, it was upgraded to suit skateboarding needs due to demands from the CONS community and their supporters. The new professional version mixes old design elements with contemporary tech, has a higher cut for a stable feeling, rubber cup-sole for lasting use, and CX foam inside to cushion against impacts. Skaters and sneaker fans both enjoy the Fastbreak because of its classic look that works in different situations; it respects its original style but also looks forward to what’s coming next.
For over a century, Converse has kept to its roots while continuing to innovate. Such an ageless style, it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t have a pair in their collection. From courtside to the club, Converse sneakers have remained a timeless symbol and have etched their presence into streetwear/sneaker history.
The Weapon and Fastbreak will be available at SNIPES in February and explore our Converse page for more from the “All-Star” brand.
