SNIPES and Nike have teamed up again, and this time, with a shared vision driven by revolutionizing the library at KIPP Middle School in Newark, NJ. This ambitious project focused on transforming the library into a vibrant and dynamic place, a haven where students can explore and grow in their educational journey.
The goal was clear: Upgrade the library with up-to-date gear like new computers, an extensive collection of books tailored for different reading levels, and a contemporary redesign. This transformation aimed to create an immersive environment for students that supports research and assignments while encouraging a love for reading.
Newark, New Jersey, faced with issues like poverty, crime, and educational resources, has seen a link between external matters causing an ongoing rise in student absences. Only 27% of students read at the required level, so programs like the library restoration project were vital.
Although, after facing administrative cuts, KIPP Middle School no longer has a librarian.
However, this setback became an opportunity as students and faculty members collaboratively stepped in to oversee and operate the library. This initiative ensures the library’s active management, but also empowers students with valuable skills in organization, leadership, and responsibility.
The KIPP Middle School’s new library is more than just a physical location—it’s a commitment to closing the reading gap. The school hopes to monitor progress, close educational gaps, and customize lessons. By providing the necessary resources to develop confident leaders, KIPP seeks to shine a light on each child’s endless potential.
