CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF HIP HOP

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF HIP HOP

50 years ago, more specifically on August 11, 1973, DJ Kool Herc reportedly mixed two copies of the same album into one seamless breakbeat at his sister’s back-to-school party in the Bronx. This party is widely considered to be the birthplace of hip-hop. Throughout the years pulsating beats, thought-provoking lyrics, and unapologetic attitudes can be used to describe hip-hop. Still, there’s no doubt the genre has undeniably transformed the cultural landscape, leaving a memorable mark on society. Beyond the music, hip-hop has evolved into a powerful movement encompassing various elements. In particular, the influence of hip-hop on streetwear has been nothing short of revolutionary. In the early beginnings, baggy jeans, oversized jerseys, and flashy sneakers boomed and bapped a bold influence and continued to pave the way for new aesthetics embodying urban style and self-expression. With its fusion of music, fashion, and personal narratives, hip-hop has reshaped how we perceive music and redefined the fabric of contemporary culture and streetwear. It has changed how we listen to music, what trends we follow, and even how we interpret the world around us and even the tales told by artists within its genre.

Hip-hop artists have long embraced fashion and sneaker culture, using their personal style to self-express and as a visual extension of their music. From the iconic looks of Run-DMC’s adidas tracksuits and shell-toe sneakers and Jay-Z’s Rocawear clothing line to Travis Scott and his numerous collaborations with Jordan Brand, hip-hop artists have become trendsetters and tastemakers in the realm of fashion. They have transformed sneakers into coveted status symbols, collaborating with renowned brands to create limited-edition releases that cause a frenzy among sneakerheads and enthusiasts. By blending high-end luxury fashion with streetwear elements, hip-hop artists have elevated their fashion choices to a form of artistry, demonstrating the power of self-identity and cultural influence within fashion and sneaker culture.

With collaborations from Nelly to Jay-Z or the highly sought-after exclusives by Travis Scott and Eminem, in honor of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, global apparel giant Nike has decided to pay tribute to the genre with their own collection of revamped classics. The AF-1 Low features a white leather upper, a glittery black and white gradient Swoosh, and an additional “50 years of hip hop” tongue tag. Moreover, the Dunk High will have a grey leather base, black overlays contrasting with its off-white midsole, and a beautiful white and black gradient Swoosh. Lastly, the classic Blazer Mid ’77 features a combination of a white leather upper with a grey midsole similar to the AF-1. Each is coupled with a gold mic embellishment, completing this genre’s commemorative look.
