SNIPES SERVES X SIGUE SONANDO FOR HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Sigue Soñando aims to convey the powerful message of continuing to dream. This is especially significant for many Latin Americans as dreams are passed down throughout generations. Our community partner, Hialeah High School has deep roots in the Latin American community with 94% of its students sharing Hispanic heritage, alongside 4% Black and 2% White non-Hispanic students. Hialeah High School is known for being a dynamic educational institution that has provided a rigorous academic curriculum. They work to prepare students for their higher education as well as careers in the arts. For the past two years, the school has had to function without an art teacher and curriculum, leaving students without an outlet for artistic expression.

Another community partner is Hialeah native Jenny Perez, a Caribbean-American artist who has made a name for herself as a painter. She has translated her work onto the walls of her community, as she has played a pivotal role in Miami’s street art movement through support from local artists and businesses. She is passionate about mentoring young artists, fostering creativity, and helping them navigate their path to becoming independent artists. Jenny worked with the students of Hialeah Senior High School on October 3rd – October 5th in a two-day interactive paint workshop. Students expressed themselves through creative designs, crafting a large-scale piece of public art featuring the words Sigue Sonando. During the morning session, students were treated to a tasting table featuring delights from local Latinx-owned bakeries and juice bars. On day two, the workshop continued with the creation of a collaborative mural. SNIPES gifted each student with a gift card and gift bag as a token of appreciation.

Also partnering with SNIPES for this activation was Hialeah, Florida, a vibrant and culturally diverse city. Known as ‘La Ciudad Que Prospera,’ which translates to the ‘City of Progress’. Hialeah boasts the highest percentage of Cuban and Cuban American residents in the United States. 94% of its population identifies as Hispanic, and it is one of the largest Spanish-speaking communities in the nation.

Part two of our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration included a Sigue Soñando Panel, including Lex Borrero, Qiana Aviles, Ben Carrillo, Jenny Perez, and host Supa Cindy. The panel recognized the voices and journeys of those in the Latinx community who are breaking down barriers within their respective fields and continuing to dream. Check out some footage from the event below!

How will you continue to foster your dreams? We are beyond excited to continue supporting our communities. Stay tuned for all the SNIPES news in our weekly blog, and follow SNIPES on Instagram, Facebook, and X for regular updates.
