If you grew up in Detroit, or in another city around the world you may have an unwavering soft spot in your heart for the city that raised you. Detroit has always made waves in the industries of art, dance, and music. In true “Detroit vs everybody” fashion, SNIPES partnered with Motor City Street Dance Academy, a dance studio and mentorship program that seeks to engage youth via the elements of hip hop, break dancing (Breakin’), DJing, Emceeing/poetry, and graffiti art, to host and produce an unforgettable experience. The MCSDA uses elements of hip-hop as a tool to empower youth and promote a healthy lifestyle. What better way to show our love for Detroit than to celebrate the dance, culture, and community in an all-in-one special event. Last year’s Dance competition received so much love, so we came back this year with a 2v2 Jit & Breakin’ Competition with a winner’s prize of $2,000. Judging the event will be Queen Gabby, Man of God, and Stringz. The host of the evening will be Kay Bae, and in the DJ booth you will find Shane Treez and Yaks. Of course, it wouldn’t be a full celebration without an after-party. Those 21 and over will be able to enjoy an open bar and live DJ set from DJ Vader. If you are unable to make the event, stay tuned to our socials to see who takes home the grand prize.
In addition to the dance battle, SNIPES partnered with MCSDA’S S.E.E.D Program last week to uplift the youth of the community by providing a space for them to express themselves freely through art. The youth were encouraged to design their own personal creations on a pair of adidas Forum Low. These sneakers will be on display and auctioned off during the Dance Championship. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to MCSDA, and SNIPES will sponsor 20 students with a one-year scholarship to the Academy.
