The Air Penny 3 is back, and it's better than ever. To celebrate the resurgence of the popular '90s hoops model, Nike has been cooking up colorways, both old and new. This month, the brand is set to release the classic “Black Royal” makeup, as well as a brand-new iteration, dubbed “Do It For Dez.”
The Air Penny 3 “Do It For Dez” honors Penny Hardaway's late friend, Desmond Merriweather, affectionately referred to as Dez. The pair grew up together in Memphis and would later reunite to coach the basketball team at Lester Middle School, which they both attended as children. The team would go on to win three middle-school championships in a row during Merriweather and Penny's tenure.
Aside from winning basketball games, the duo won the hearts of their players by providing structure and mentorship in a turbulent neighborhood. Desmond Merriweather loved his players, his school, and the city of Memphis. He passed away in 2015 after a long battle with colon cancer.
This heartfelt tribute features a tumbled leather upper, with the left sneaker receiving a “Varsity Royal” hue, and the right, a “University Red” makeup. Dark “Metallic Silver” Foamposite overlays envelop the lateral sides, while tiger-striped Nike Swooshes embellish the lateral side panels. Signature “1 Cent” branding is placed on the lateral heels, and “Do It For Dez” is inscribed on the sockliners.
The Air Penny 3 “Do It For Dez” will be available November 20th on JimmyJazz.com for a retail price of $160.
