Since the 1970s, Art Basel has taken the art and creative world by storm by showcasing the best artists in the industry at some of the globe’s leading galleries. Originally founded as a means of expanding, diversifying and welcoming a new wave of collectors in the community – the event itself garnered support from over 16,000 visitors to see 90 galleries and 30 publishers from 10 different countries. The Art Basel event has evolved to be a platform for the most provocative and radical forms of contemporary art, let alone as a place for innovation and expression to shine. Thanks to their growing success around the world and within the community, in the early 2000s, Art Basel was able to create an event hosted in Miami Beach. This event exhibited 160 galleries from palaces such as North America, Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, attracted more than 30,000 visitors and featured varying mediums such as painting, film, sculpture, photography and more – all within the realm of both contemporary and modern art. Needless to say, the fairs in Basel, Hong Kong and Miami Beach are of the utmost importance to the community, for representation and for accessibility within career paths.
Here at SNIPES, we were eager to participate in the events at the 2022 Art Basel Miami Beach fair. Through community commitment and evolvement, as well as with our partnership with MARTK’D (a brand that is dedicated to creating programs and partnerships to showcase up-and-coming talent), we were able to host a collaborative art activation to help best support our budding artists and creatives. On December 3rd at the Graffiti Museum, a panel made up of MARTK’D founder Dion Walcott, artist Sydney James and a representative from the museum were able to answer questions and provide guidance for those inquiring for help. After the panel the “Raised from Concrete” activation was launched: hosted by artists Fel, Medusa, Ledania and Phree, participants were able to watch and engage to learn specific styles and techniques.
