An area south of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, described as the “hole of the donut,” Wyckoff Gardens is home to just over 1,100 residents living in three 21-story buildings provided by NYC Housing Authority. The large towers offer mixed-income housing in the centralized Boerum Hill neighborhood, a fashionable spot known for its indie boutiques, trendy restaurants, and generally laid-back vibe. Although the developing location continues to climb with the city’s investments in improved public housing, other nearby neighborhoods seem to be growing twice as fast. Surrounded by several up-and-comers like Downtown Brooklyn, Gowanus, and Prospect Heights, Boerum Hill is often overlooked in the larger landscape of these rising northwest Brooklyn neighborhoods. Despite the surging streets around them, Wyckoff residents know that their small slice of Brooklyn doesn’t represent the donut’s hole, but rather the rich filling that gives it such a distinct flavor. The tight-knit Wyckoff Gardens offers a strong sense of belonging, its people undaunted by the busy borough it resides in, giving the area a unique comforting quality. With the community more than deserving of a buzzing block party, the SNIPES team plans to make their way to 3rd Avenue & Nevins St. this Saturday, July 30th, to highlight a pressing issue and celebrate the residents of Wyckoff.
A Mother’s Screamz – a SNIPES SERVES event against gun violence – speaks to an earth-shattering sound that no community ever wants to hear. Although Brooklyn officials have pledged to combat gun crime with the STOP VIOLENCE initiative, far too many young individuals fall victim to these incidents, and there is plenty of work to be done that can help make Wyckoff, Boerum Hill, and the surrounding borough a safer place for all. SNIPES SERVES intends to spread this message with the block party on Saturday, providing free food, a live DJ, and a chance to win a $500 SNIPES Back to School giveaway. Kids will also get the opportunity to learn about Crack the Code, the latest SNIPES initiative aiming to promote digital equity with a revitalized community center located in the Wyckoff housing complex. The Crack the Code lab is available for students K-12 and their families, offering access to iPads, smartboards, laptops, and printers to advance the academic success of our future leaders. If you’re in the area and want to show your love for Wyckoff, join us for this empowering event and feel the energy emanating from this incredible community.
