Whether it’s Popping, Locking, Breaking, or something in between, Hip-Hop dance is an integral piece of Hip-Hop culture that gets the crowd on its feet and makes the world a dancefloor. With its roots tying back to the early ‘70s, the Hip-Hop dance style has grown immensely in popularity, becoming an all-inclusive global phenomenon. The dance style has come a long way since its inception, but women can still face challenges while making a name for themselves in the Hip-Hop space as compared to their male counterparts. Many female dancers beginning their Hip-Hop careers feel they must prove themselves or become experts in their craft to be taken seriously. Although women attempting to break into Hip-Hop culture can still face several obstacles, many organizations and foundations have been created to support women and girls in Hip-Hop dance competitions and performances. SNIPES is proud to officially partner with Ladies of Hip-Hop, a nonprofit organization committed to building a better environment for women and girls looking to leave their mark on the future of Hip-Hop dance.
Founded in Philadelphia and currently operating out of Long Island City, New York, Ladies of Hip-Hop (LOHH) provides artistic opportunities for women and girls in Hip-Hop culture through female-powered workshops, performances, public talks, and professional development training. LOHH goes beyond the world of dance, creating a sense of community for future female leaders at an international level. Since the early 2000s, women and girls from all over the world have gathered at the Ladies of Hip-Hop Festival to celebrate Hip-Hop culture with classes, panel discussions, and epic dance battles in a full week of festival fun. For LOHH to properly prepare for the festival as well as ongoing events and activations, SNIPES provided the nonprofit with a brand new 1,500 sq. ft. studio, helping to make Ladies of Hip-Hop the premier dance destination of New York. Members of the organization celebrated the new studio launch with Litefeet, Hip Hop Fuzion, and Jit dance classes, followed by a reception and panel examining the female presence in Hip-Hop culture and discussing future plans for the studio. With plenty of space to host classes and panels, LOHH can help facilitate the future of women and girls in Hip-Hop culture by continuing to create a sense of community through dance. SNIPES is planning to support many more events with our new official partner, so please stay tuned for more!
